The Brackett Rocket returns to the Park!
. . .
Brackett Park, 28th St. E & 36th Ave. S, Minneapolis |
|
AN HISTORIC ICON OF MINNEAPOLIS’ PAST
For more than 50 years, the Brackett Rocket was an integral part of the Minneapolis Seward and Longfellow neighborhoods. Children and families played on the 25-foottall, rocket-shaped structure, located at Brackett Park.
Erected in 1962, the Brackett Rocket was a symbol of America’s entry into the space program and a beacon of discovery, exploration and promise for Twin Cities neighborhood children. In 2004 the Brackett Rocket was removed to allow for park renovations and put in storage. A grass-roots effort to “save the rocket,” has transformed the rocket into a public art icon in the park.
SPARKING CREATIVITY IN THE PRESENT
Minneapolis artist Randy Walker has rejuvenated the old rocket in his new design "Return Journey." Randy is recognized for his large-scale corn crib public art installation at the Gibbs Museum of Pioneer and Dakotah Life in St. Paul, and a major installation for the Ridgedale Library. He is currently working on a large-scale sculpture for the City of St. Louis Park.

In its return to the park, the 25-foot tall Rocket is depicted "launching" from a flame-colored column rising ten feet off the ground. Centered within an elliptical setting of boulders and landscaping. 84 shimmering metal cables catch the light as the rocket "takes off" from "ground control."

We are in the “final countdown” to landscape, light, and maintain the rocket.
